Garifuna Culture
The community of Batalla is home to the proud and resilient Garifuna indigenous group, descendents of African slaves that mixed with other indigenous peoples after their arrival in the area in the latter 18th Century to form a completely new ethnic group. Enjoy the Garifuna culture by taking in a fantastic traditional dancing/drumming performance by a local group, visit a traditional home and see how the flat “casaba” bread is made, or take a boat tour in Laguna Bacalar, a RAMSAR site that has received this international designation due to its vast mangrove forests that provide critical habitat for endangered species such as the Caribbean Manatee and unique birds such as the Jabirú. |
